What Began as a Job Became a Calling

Submitted by: Katrina, Detroit

For nearly three years, I had the privilege of working as a respite care provider for children with disabilities, primarily those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. What began as a job quickly became a meaningful and transformative experience that shaped both my professional aspirations and my understanding of the profound impact compassionate support can have on individuals and families. Through this role, I discovered a passion for helping others overcome challenges beyond their control and empowering them to reach their full potential.

One of the most influential experiences of my caregiving career was working with a 12-year-old boy diagnosed with autism, ADHD, and a genetic condition involving an extra chromosome that contributed to significant emotional and behavioral challenges. When we first met, building a relationship was not easy. He was hesitant to trust me and struggled to understand why a caregiver was involved in his life. Rather than forcing a connection, I focused on learning who he was as an individual. I spent time understanding his triggers, communication style, interests, and emotional needs. I learned how to approach difficult moments in ways that helped him feel safe, understood, and supported rather than judged or punished.

Over time, that patience and consistency paid off. The trust we built became the foundation of a strong and meaningful relationship. Together, we spent countless hours exploring the community, visiting his favorite grocery stores, going to the library, sharing meals, and simply enjoying each other's company. What stood out most, however, was witnessing his growth. As our relationship strengthened, he became more successful in school, developed stronger friendships, and engaged more openly in therapy. Watching him gain confidence and navigate challenges with greater independence was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

My role extended beyond supporting my client alone. I also worked closely with his family, particularly his mother, to ensure they felt supported and connected to available resources. We frequently discussed his progress, ongoing challenges, and ways I could help meet the family's needs. Through these conversations, I came to understand that effective caregiving is not limited to supporting one individual—it involves strengthening the entire support system surrounding that person. By providing resources, encouragement, and practical support, I helped the family advocate for themselves and access services that improved their overall well-being.

Unfortunately, our journey together ended sooner than any of us expected when changes in the family's insurance coverage made them ineligible for respite care services. The news was heartbreaking. The family had come to rely on the support and stability our relationship provided, and I had grown deeply invested in their lives. Hearing my client tell me he never wanted another respite care worker because of the bond we had formed was both affirming and incredibly difficult. Saying goodbye was one of the hardest moments of my caregiving experience.

Despite the sadness of that ending, the experience taught me lessons that will stay with me throughout my career and my life. Most importantly, it showed me the power of connection, trust, and advocacy. It reinforced my belief that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and supported, especially when facing circumstances beyond their control. It also taught me that meaningful change often begins with something as simple as showing up consistently and building genuine relationships.

Today, I am pursuing a Master of Social Work degree with the goal of providing therapeutic services to children, adolescents, and families facing challenges similar to those I witnessed as a respite care provider. This experience confirmed my desire to advocate for vulnerable populations and help individuals navigate obstacles they did not choose but must nevertheless overcome. I hope to create the same sense of support, understanding, and empowerment that my client and his family experienced during our time together.

I will always be grateful for the opportunity to serve as a respite care provider. The relationships I built, the lessons I learned, and the impact this work had on my life continue to inspire me every day. What began as a job became a calling, and it ultimately led me toward a career dedicated to supporting children and families when they need it most.
